Bashar al-Assad has travelled to Russia to meet Vladimir Putin

The situation in Syria is now favorable for the political process, Russia's president said late Thursday.

The much awaited meeting on May 21 is being already being billed as an "important occasion" for the two leaders to exchange views on global matters in a broad and long-term perspective with the objective of further strengthening "the special and privileged strategic partnership".

President Putin will also host lunch for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "It is very flexible", sources said but clarified that bilateral issues will not figure much at the deliberations and the talks can be confined to issues of regional, multi national and global relevance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Western attacks in the country removed any moral obstacle to arming Syria.
