Dixon Police Chief Steve Howell, Jr. and Lee County Sheriff John Simonton are praising a school resource officer who shot a gunman at Dixon High School Wednesday morning and said his actions likely saved many lives.
He was pursued by the school's resource officer, who shot him in the shoulder outside of the building. The officer returned fire and hit the gunman. The suspect refused to comply with the officer and allegedly opened fire. "We're lucky the officer was there", said City Administrator Danny Langloss, the father of a student who was in the gym. Timereports he suffered non-life threatening injuries and is now receiving medical treatment.
There is a debate over school resource officers/armed guards at schools. Howell says because of his actions, there were no injuries to students, staff and the public. No one else was injured.
The suspect is being treated for injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.
According to Sauk Valley, Milby was a senior at Dixon High School but was recently expelled, and thus not graduating with the rest of his class.
UPDATE: DIXON, Ill. (WIFR) - Dixon police expect to have a press conference at 11 a.m.in regards to the school shooting Wednesday morning.
Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and say there is no further threat to the safety of students and staff.
Federal and state officials also responded to the scene in Dixon, about 100 miles west of Chicago. "His fearless actions saved a lot of lives", said Langloss, whose daughter was among the seniors in the gym.
Parents have been instructed by the school district to pick up children at a baseball field roughly a half mile from the school.
