Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was grilled by Congress over the Cambridge Analytica scandal

The investigation is making good on Mark Zuckerberg's March promise to find other apps like Cambridge Analytica-i.e., ones that collected data not just from Facebook users who signed up for the apps, but also all of their friends.

Six million people are thought to have completed tests set by the myPersonality Facebook app, with nearly half agreeing to share details from their Facebook profiles with the understanding that data collected would be distributed "in an anonymous manner such that the information can not be traced back to the individual user". Today's hearing, titled "Cambridge Analytica and the Future of Data Privacy", will be his first public appearance before USA lawmakers.

Only a week after founder of Facebook appeared for hours before U.S. Congress, Zuckerberg was called (again) to give explanations in parliament.

"[If Facebook] truly recognises the "seriousness" of these issues as they say they do, we would expect that he [Zuckerberg] would want to appear in front of the Committee and answer questions that are of concern not only to Parliament, but Facebook's tens of millions of users in this country", Collins added.

Yet the question of whether Zuckerberg should explain himself publicly remains a point of contention.

The hearing starts today at 10 a.m. ET at the Dirksen Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. C-SPAN will offer a live stream of the hearing here.

Tajani said that simply showing up to explain himself was already a good move.

Wylie is a Canadian data researcher credited with coming up with the plan, after meetings with Steve Bannon, former Breitbart chairman and chief executive officer of Trump's 2016 campaign. "Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation".

A Facebook spokesman said: "We have accepted the Council of Presidents' proposal to meet with leaders of the European Parliament and appreciate the opportunity for dialogue, to listen to their views and show the steps we are taking to better protect people's privacy".

Zuckerberg's European Union visit will be his first since a whistleblower alleged that Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested information from over 50 million Facebook accounts to help Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election.

Zuckerberg has so far declined to appear, to the British lawmakers' annoyance.
