Ex-cop accused of standing down during Parkland high school shooting receives massive pension: Report

Scot Peterson's $8K-plus pension: It pays to be cowardly

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson should have gone inside.

Surveillance video from the school showed Peterson positioned outside of the school, but didn't offer much else in the way of details regarding his actions as confessed gunman Nikolas Cruz shot people inside.

Scot Peterson came under fire earlier this year when he failed to confront the gunman that opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, killing 17 people with an AR-15 rifle.

What was the response to Peterson receiving his pension?

The report found that the 55-year-old Peterson will be retiring with a monthly pension of $8,702.35, and received his first payment last month.

Peterson earned more than $101,000 in his final year as a sheriff's deputy through a combination of regular pay plus overtime and other compensation. Until the shooting, he was considered a trusted school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas, according to annual reviews of his performance.

Scot Peterson, the disgraced ex-cop who allegedly stood by as the crazed Parkland school shooter gunned down 17 people, is living large.

According to the state pension handbook, Peterson's pension payments are based on the "total number of years he worked and the average of his five highest-paid fiscal years". Pollack told the Sun-Sentinel.

There are no charges or circumstances that would affect Scot Peterson's pension, according to a March 28 department letter requesting local officials submit information pertaining to Peterson's retirement benefits. The Department of Management Services spokeswoman said health benefits, which Peterson receives through the sheriff's office, are not included in the monthly amount he receives in pension.

Andrew Pollack, the father of victim Meadow Pollack, called Peterson "the coward of Broward" on Twitter, and a legislator, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Coral Springs, called on Scott to take away Peterson's pension. That money should go to actually securing our schools!
