Seattle Mariners' Robinson Cano Gets 80-Game Ban

Robinson Cano suspended 80 games for violating MLB's drug policy

Robinson Cano To Be Suspended 80 Games ... for Steroids

Cano tested positive for the diuretic furosemide, which violates the MLB's drug prevention and treatment program. He also said he will accept the suspension, rather than exercise his right to an appeal if he hadn't already done so.

"For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life", Cano said in part.

Cano said he was caught using a furosemide, which people throughout the game consider a drug masking agent.

Cano's positive resulted from an offseason test, a person familiar with the process said. Cano reportedly dropped that appeal after Major League Baseball was able to determine his intent.

Cano in a statement admitted that he took Furosemide and said it was given to him by a licensed medical doctor in the Dominican Republic to "treat a medial ailment". "While I did not realize at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful".

As for how the rest of this will play out, Cano's current time on the disabled list will count as time served during his suspension. Baseball's drug program doesn't distinguish between a healthy and unhealthy player. While Cano will lose more than $11 million in salary during his suspension, the team is still on the hook for $120 million owed his way over the next five seasons.

"This was the most hard decision I have ever made in my life, but ultimately the right decision given that I do not dispute that I was given this substance", Cano said in his statement, in reference to accepting the suspension. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, team-mates and the Mariners organization. "I look forward to rejoining my teammates later this season".

It was the first major strike in a career that has Hall of Fame potential.

"It's surprising, because I know Robbie". No, no, no, no. Ryan Braun was a drug cheat. Bonds, the game's all-time leader in home runs, has topped out at 56.4 percent of the 75 percent needed for induction in six years on the ballot. His 305 home runs are second all time among those to primarily play the position behind only Jeff Kent, and his 1,206 RBIs rank eighth and his 2,417 hits are 12th among second basemen.
