Young fans endure the rain during a pitch inspection

After day one was washed out, Ireland won the toss and opted to bowl on day two against Pakistan and they started brightly.

There was drama at a sun-drenched Malahide even before the wickets fell, with Pakistan debutant Imam-ul-Haq injured off the first ball of the match.

Pakistan opener Azhar Ali attempted to scoot through for a quick single and Imam-ul-Haq, the nephew of former worldwide batsman Inzamam, collided with Niall O'Brien, forcing a delay while he was attended to.

Kevin O'Brien looked to be relishing his Test innings debut but Ireland continued to lose wickets, with Stuart Thompson and Tyrone Kane both being found out by leg-spinner Shadab Khan in the space of three deliveries. While Abbas scalped a couple of wickets, Amir grabbed one.

The opening day's play was rained off meaning that the clash between Ireland and Pakistan at Malahide Castle was delayed until Saturday, which cost Cricket Ireland a pricey £66,000.

"I don't want to go round with a massively long face projecting misery, because it isn't, we are still hugely proud, there are still four days left in the match and, who knows, in the record books it may say we took the game to the fifth day", he said.

The Prime Minister also said that India would install a Bhabhatron radiation therapy machine in Kathmandu's cancer hospital. Federal government ministers Ishwor Pokharel, Giriraj Mani Pokharel and Matrika Yadav were present at the programme.

Prior to that only 11 Irishmen had ever played Test cricket, including fast bowler Boyd Rankin, who appeared for England in 2014, before returning to Ireland.

William Porterfield's decision was rewarded nearly immediately as Rankin and Murtagh, among the more senior members in the side, picked up a wicket each to break Pakistan down to 13 for 2 inside the first ten overs. That all changed after lunch though as the visitors lost four wickets in the second session of the day.

The batsman was left stricken on the turf but after receiving several minutes of treatment from the Pakistan physio, was able to carry on.

Shafiq though completed a 107-ball fifty before a pull off the towering Rankin went straight to square leg. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed (20) was caught by Stirling in the slips off Thompson. The best of those came when Ashraf edged a ball from Rankin that could have been taken by either wicket-keeper, Niall O'Brien, or Gary Wilson at first slip.

At the other end, Faheem started the slower of the two but quickly changed gears as he too brought up a half-century with the partnership going beyond the 100-run mark.

The players came off just after that for bad light and thunder and heavy showers meant they would not return, with Shadab on 52 and Ashraf on 61.
