Armenia’s ‘Revolutionary Granny Leila “We’re Headed for a Better Day”
The Armenian parliament voted to elect opposition leader Nikol Pashinian prime minister on Tuesday almost one month after he launched sustained anti-government protests that led to resignation of Armenia's longtime leader, SerzhSarkisian.
On Tuesday morning, ahead of the vote, thousands of Pashinyan supporters gathered in Yerevan's central Republic Square, sporting white t-shirts with their leader's portrait or dancing traditional Armenian dances and chanting "Nikol prime minister".
Thirteen members of Sargsyan's ruling Republican Party - which still holds a majority in parliament - voted for Pashinyan, just barely more than needed to push him over the threshold. Mr Pashinyan, who had been detained and then released from jail during the protests, called for snap elections to choose a new "people's prime minister".
In December 2015, controversial constitutional amendments initiated by Sarkisian were passed after a referendum that saw some 63 percent of the voters backing the country's transformation into a parliamentary republic with executive powers fully concentrated in the hands of a prime minister. He said his first priority was to organize the first fair parliamentary elections in many years.
At a rally on April 17, opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan announced beginning of the Velvet Revolution in the country. "Corruption will be eradicated", Pashinyan said. In particular, he reiterated that Armenia will remain part of the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
"We chose a new road in Armenia where the driver will be the people and not clans".
Pashinian went into hiding following the deadly suppression on March 1-2, 2008 of post-election protests in Yerevan.
The protest movement was sparked when Sargsyan moved to the premier position early in April after he reached a term limit after 10 years as president.
"The Republican Party has made the political decision to support the candidate nominated ... for the sake of stability in our country", said Vahram Bagdasaryan, the head of the Republicans' faction in parliament, in a speech before the vote. "The victory is that you chose who would be prime minister".
Sargsyan resigned the premiership six days after his appointment.
