Attorney General Jeff Sessions makes visit to San Diego border

Attorney General Jeff Sessions to visit San Diego border Monday

The move would also mean that even if immigrants caught at the border illegally have valid asylum claims, they could still end up with federal criminal convictions on their record regardless of whether a judge finds they have a right to live and stay in the US.

Many of the Central American migrants who traveled together to the southern border via caravan over the last month expected to face a similar process.

"That's why the Department of Homeland Security is now referring 100 percent of illegal southwest border crossings to the Department of Justice for prosecution, and the Department of Justice will take up these cases".

"If you cross the border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you".

"When respect for the rule of law diminishes, so too does our ability to protect our great nation, its borders and its citizens", Sessions said in a statement.

Sessions visited the Mexican border near Border Field State Park to outline the tough new policy on illegal immigration. The Wall Street Journal, citing the Department of Health and Human Services, reported earlier Monday that 700 children had been separated from their families since October of a year ago. The idea behind the policy is to curb the number of people seeking to cross the border. "We will continue to work with our partners in each U.S. Attorney's offices to aggressively pursue prosecutions of criminal illegal entry". "If you're smuggling a child, then we are going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law".

Sessions' visit follows a March visit by President Donald Trump to Otay Mesa to survey border wall prototypes. "But we can not take everyone on Earth who is in a hard situation".

Last week, Sessions announced that the Justice Department was sending 35 assistant US attorneys to the southwestern border to to "prosecute illegal entries into our country", while 18 immigration judges would focus "full time" on clearing a backlog of asylum claims.
