Cambridge Analytica ordered to release data on US voter

Reuters found that 22% of the users polled confessed that they use Facebook more.

Facebook earlier came clean about how almost tens and millions of its user data was illegally accessed by Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, that worked on the Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. Data derivatives are often much more valuable than the original raw data itself, as they can contain predictive models or psychological groupings of users in a data set. The survey of 2,194 adults conducted at the end of April revealed that half Facebook's American users have not recently changed the amount they use the site, while another quarter said they were using it more than before the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke on 16 March.

Some 43 percent of respondents to a recent Fox News poll said that they had considered deleting their Facebook account.

Carroll first submitted a request to Cambridge Analytica for his data in January 2017, at which point SCL Group requested that he submit a 10 pound fee and proof of identity in order to obtain such information.

Accused of using Facebook users' personal data to sway the outcome of the United States 2016 presidential election and the UK Brexit referendum, Cambridge Analytica announced this week it was closing down. While the original data was deleted, Cambridge Analytica kept derivatives of that data. "Nobody's outraged on a visceral level".

A mid-April survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute, a US -based think tank, found that just 27 percent of 3,000 respondents believe Facebook will protect their privacy and user data, down from 79 percent in 2017.

"The ICO has been investigating the SCL Group and Cambridge Analytica as part of a wider investigation into the use of personal data and analytics by political campaigns, social media companies and others", an ICO spokesperson stated on the watchdog's website.

Thirty-nine percent said they have changed their privacy settings on Facebook since the Cambridge Analytica revelation, the highest rate among all platforms.

Asked if they were aware of their current privacy settings, 74% of Facebook users said they were, and 78% said they knew how to change them. Up to 310,000 Germans were affected by the scandal as well.

Among the biggest announcements made in the conference was Facebook's plans to build a "Clear History" privacy tool which will enable users to see the websites and apps that send information to Facebook when they use them.

Twitter and Myspace were the top two social media sites that Facebook users left.
