The fields will include e-commerce technology, cloud computing, and machine learning, a statement said. More than 6,000 people now work for Amazon in Canada, including 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver at several sites.

"The new jobs that we'll be creating at Amazon, like those we already have, will be corporate positions with most being specialized high-tech roles", said Jesse Dougherty, manager of Amazon web services.

He noted that Amazon has had considerable success recruiting and hiring Canadians - a mix of experienced coders, university graduates and people who have chosen to live and work in Canada.

Amazon bought Kiva Systems, a robotics company based in the Boston suburb of North Reading, in 2012. And on top of Monday's announcement, in November past year, Amazon announced it would be expanding into another downtown site on Dunsmuir Street, which will open in 2020.

In September, Langford was among Canadian cities that placed bids to host Amazon's new headquarters, HQ2.

The expansion into a new 430,000-square-foot office in Seaport Square will double Amazon's tech workforce in Boston and surrounding areas adding 2,000 new jobs to the existing 3,500 in the area, CBS4 reported.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared at the event with Vancouver employees at the site of a planned 416,000 square foot Development Center, which is scheduled to open in 2022.

The Boston area remains on the shortlist for Amazon's second headquarters, with $5 billion in infrastructure investments and 50,000 high-paying jobs expected for that location when it is chosen later this year, CBS4 reported.

Amazon, which employs more than 1,000 people in Vancouver, in November announced a lease that, from 2020, would give the company space for an additional 2,000 workers.

"I want to highlight Amazon's commitment to recruiting top talent from our universities and give students the opportunity to have a direct impact on the evolution of their technologies at an early stage of their career", Trudeau said, speaking at a press conference.
