Samad was second on the Saudi-led coalition's most wanted list of Houthi leaders.

Commenting on the killing of the top official, Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi, one of the Houthis' leaders, said that "this crime won't go unanswered", holding the United States and Saudi Arabia responsible for the killing.

"He was the acting president in the Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, so this is considered the biggest blow for the Houthis, politically, since the war started", he told Al Jazeera.

The civilians were mostly women and children, who were in a tent set up for the wedding party.

Several strikes reportedly killed six others in his retinue.

It's part of a civil war that has now claimed some 10,000 lives.

"This is not the first time that civilians at a wedding party have been killed by coalition airstrikes, it is despicable, and points to either gross negligence or, a deliberate strategy to commit war crimes".

The Saudi-led coalition blames the Houthis, saying they are using civilians as human shields and hiding among the civilian population. They say they have poured money into Yemen to help the humanitarian response.

Leader of the Houthi Ansarullah movement Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi held the United States and Saudi Arabia responsible for Samad's killing, saying, "This crime won't go unanswered".

Chairman of Yemen's Supreme Political Council Saleh al-Samad was killed last Thursday after the Saudi-led coalition targeted his residence in the Red Sea port city of Hudaydah.

The coalition is operating in Yemen in support of the government that was ousted from the capital, Sanaa, by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in March 2015. It is thought the bride is also among the dead. In statement released by the Houthi-run Saba News Agency, the group threatened revenge.

Houthis TV network Al-Masirah reported that the Houthis had appointed Mahdi al-Mashat, once director of al-Houthi's office, to replace Samad. "The oppressor must be aware that this crime will not pass without an earthshaking and painful response", it said.
