Students continue to protest gun violence
On Friday, the walkouts were sparked by 16-year-old Lane Murdock, a Ridgefield High School in CT, who began an online petition on Change.org calling for the protest following the February shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 14 students and three staff members dead. They ended in front of Fresno Unified School District.
"As Tigers I know how much this matters to you", said Munoz.
Lora Wimsatt, communications director for Daviess County Public Schools, said she checked with county schools and had not heard of any activity associated with the day of action.
This movement had been in the works since the walkout in March that supported the victims in Parkland High School shooting in Florida.
High school students from across Fairbanks walked out of class today in support of those who were lost on that day.
Principal Scott Christy said in a letter to other schools in his district that April "has always been a time to respectfully remember our loss, and also support efforts to make our communities a better place".
The students with the Phoenix March for Our Lives group rallied on the anniversary of the 1999 school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.
One of the organizers of the event, Ainsley Moench, said when she first heard about the Parkland shooting, she "just thought of it as another shooting before it really hit me that it was like 17 students that were killed that were my age".
"We wanted this to be a moment where we could actually create real change and I wanted to educate people on current gun laws and what they can do", said Nelson.
UK Wage Rise Beats Inflation - Maybe United Kingdom inflation slowed to a one year-low in March, diminishing scope for a rate hike in May as markets widely expect. Figures showed air transport falling 2.1 per cent month on month, a smaller decline than the 3.9 per cent fall in March 2017.
"People confuse it with wanting to take guns away, and that's not what it's about", Sharp said.
The 11th-grader at the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts carried a sign that said, "We will march until we disarm every American". Though he believes school shootings are a problem, he said the gun control measures his peers are rallying for are "authoritative" and "too big of a measure".
"We can go out and protest and we can do all of these sorts of things, but if we do not put pressure on our legislators, the people who have control over our city and state and national governments, then how is there going to be policy change?"
Toward the end of the rally, student organizers read their mission statement of specific legislation they want lawmakers to enact. Specifically, they hope it lowers gun violence rates in lower income communities, which they said have struggled with the issue for a long time.
"I do think people attack me because when I was having a debate here, it was respectful, but still, they were constantly interrupting me", Haydn said.
Schools from across the United States participated in the walkout.
"I didn't expect anyone to come out, and it doesn't matter because we need to show the kids, if they choose to be out here, we're here", Henderson said.
"They talked with the organizer and chose to do a voter registration at lunch", Powell said. We keep talking. We keep working.
