Former First Lady Barbara Bush, the wife and mother of two presidents, has chose to end medical treatment for a life-threatening illness.

As reported, Barbara Bush is the 37th First Lady of the United States when her husband, George H.W. Bush, was President.

Bush has been in and out of hospital recently and is now in "failing health", according to a family spokesman.

"She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving", it continued.

The Bushes have been married longer than any presidential couple in American history.

"Barbara and I are so sorry we can't be there for your inauguration on January 20th".

Bush became one of two women in USA history whose husband and son became Presidents after George W. Bush's 2000 victory.

Former U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, now ambassador to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, tweeted that Bush is "one of America's most loved women", and that "I join thousands in hoping she is comfortable and knows how loved she is throughout the world!" As her husband's career began to flourish, Barbara remained family-centric, once saying, "At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal".

McGrath did not elaborate on Bush's health problems. "I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" Months earlier, he was a Houston's Methodist Hospital for 16 days, also for pneumonia. She established the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy decades ago, promoting reading skills across America, particularly for young children.

The former President, who also served as vice president from 1981 to 1989, also broke a bone in his neck in 2015 when he fell at the family summer compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.
