Trump Slams McCabe After IG's Report: 'He Lied'

14 April 2018, 08:17 | Damon Campbell

President Trump touts 'total disaster' watchdog report alleging Andrew McCabe leaked to reporters

Former FBI Deputy Director Is Faulted in Scathing Inspector General Report

The report, first published by The New York Times, asserts that McCabe misled the DOJ watchdog and former FBI Director James Comey about the leak authorizations.

The report's findings were cited by Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month when he made the decision to fire McCabe, just before his planned retirement.

The Justice Department's inspector general concluded in a newly released report that McCabe had acted to further his own interests by leaking information about the FBI's investigation into the Clinton Foundation.

The Department of Justice watchdog on Friday sent a report to Congress that led to the firing of a former top Federal Bureau of Investigation official who has been the target of President Donald Trump's ire in recent months.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also likened Messers McCabe to Comey, calling them "2 peas in a pod" at Friday's press briefing with reporters.

McCabe has disputed that assessment and issued a point-by-point rebuttal on Friday. "No collusion, all made up by this den of thieves and lowlifes!" the president wrote on Friday afternoon.

McCabe, who served as Deputy Director for almost two years, was sacked last month. Trump called the firing a "great day for Democracy".

The team added that the cyclist died "in the presence of his family members and loved ones, who we keep in our thoughts". It's just one of those races that takes a lot from you, not just physically but mentally too.

"The core weakness of the OIG report is the lack of any understandable motive for his alleged wrongdoing", said the statement in part.

He said the allegations were too thin to support firing McCabe, and he criticized Sessions for submitting to pressure in his "rush to terminate" McCabe. He sarcastically thanked Trump in a Twitter post on Friday for "providing even more material" for the lawsuit he is considering.

McCabe responded to the firing by charging it was part of a larger effort from the Trump administration to discredit the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. The political action committee for then-Virginia Governor McAuliffe, a Democrat and Clinton ally, donated $467,500 to her campaign, while the Virginia Democratic party gave $207,788, The Journal reported. During that interview, McCabe again said he didn't authorize the disclosure and didn't know who did.

Andrew McCabe has always been under fire, specifically by Republicans who have voiced conflict-of-interest complaints over McCabe's ties to the Democratic Party.

Republican critics have already seized on revelations that two FBI officials who worked on the Russian Federation investigation, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, exchanged text messages that were sharply critical of Trump.

The OIG determined that McCabe was, indeed, "authorized to disclose the existence of the [Clinton Foundation] Investigation publicly if such a disclosure fell within the "public interest" exception in applicable FBI and DOJ policies generally prohibiting such a disclosure of an ongoing investigation".

(5) After the report, McCabe fought back (through his attorney). Though the statement or suggestion was not under oath, it still got McCabe in trouble.
