Madikizela-Mandela

The young Madikizela-Mandela grew up in what is now Eastern Cape province and came to Johannesburg as the city's first black female social worker.

She died on Monday, April 2, at the age of 81.

She described Madikizela-Mandela as "a heroine for a whole continent and a symbol of resistance". She told how she met Madikizela-Mandela 60 years ago at the Baragwanath Hospital, where they both worked. She bore witness to our suffering.

"There were times when people could not afford a funeral and she would assist", said neighbour Gloria Searole, 31, a service consultant who went to catch a glimpse of the procession along with her daughter.

He recited Maya Angelou's poem "Nonetheless I Rise".

Meanwhile, Madikizela-Mandela's friend Mrs Mokgobo also has also shared fond memories of her.

"Long before it was fashionable to call for Nelson Mandela's release from Robben Island, it was my mother who kept his memory alive", Zenani Mandela-Dlamini said as the audience packing a 40,000-seat stadium erupted in cheers.

"I was not aware of what she has done for us and I am still shocked after I learned the truth about the extent to which she went to fight for us, - being a black woman in a male-dominated country".

Mandela-Dlamini, her elder daughter, accused the media of being complicit in an extended "smear marketing campaign" towards her mom. "Praising her now that she's gone shows what hypocrites you are".

Winnie who was referred to as the anti-apartheid icon was honored at Orlando stadium in Soweto, South Africa.

The funeral is the highest level that South Africa accords for someone who was not head of state.

EFF leader Julius Malema did not pull any punches when he took to the podium to pay tribute to struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, with whom he maintained a close relationship despite his falling out with the ruling party.

Typically referred to as the "Mom of the Nation" and "Mama Winnie", Madikizela-Mandela fought to maintain South Africa's anti-apartheid wrestle within the worldwide highlight whereas her husband, Nelson Mandela, was imprisoned.

Condolences poured in from around the world in remembrance of one of the 20th century's most prominent political activists.

Some ANC members started attempts to drown out Malema by booing and singing, but he continued and called on Soweto residents to never forget her name.
