(Reuters) - A us judge in Philadelphia has ruled that limousine drivers for Uber Technologies are independent contractors and not the company's employees under federal law, the first ruling of its kind on a crucial issue for the ride-hailing company.
Uber has agreed to comply with new settlement terms laid out by the US Federal Trade Commission pertaining to the ride-hailing company's 2017 data breach.
The world's largest ride-hailing company said a dedicated "safety center" feature will be available on its app that will include information on driver screening processes, insurance protections and community guidelines.
The company is launching a new auto rental service on its app, giving Uber's users access to a vehicle for short needs like a daytime field trip or picking up groceries.
As if the breach wasn't problematic enough, it was later discovered that Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the data, and then kept details of the breach quiet under the guise of the legitimate bug bounty program offered by Uber on the HackerOne bug bounty platform.

But its drivers have been accused of sexually harassing passengers, and the company is facing a possible class action lawsuit filed by women who say Uber drivers raped, assaulted, or kidnapped them. "By sharing our aggregated and anonymized trip data, Uber can help inform decisions about how to adapt existing infrastructure and invest in future solutions to make our cities more efficient", said Rob Khazzam, General Manager, Uber Canada. Moovel, for example, is a subsidiary of Daimler that is already integrating transit fare payment, bike sharing and vehicle sharing (Daimler also owns the car-sharing service car2go.) The Transit app allows travelers in 125 cities to plan trips using buses, subway, bikeshare (docked and dockless), carsharing and Uber.
The company announced a partnership with Masabi, a public transit mobile ticketing startup.
"Uber riders will not only be able to see transit routes, see transit information, but you'll also be able to use the Uber app as a ticket onto these transit agencies themselves".
"This represents the beginning of a sustained investment on behalf of Uber into making mass transit and public transit real first-class services", Khanna said. "Cars are shared by people throughout the city and equipped with Getaround's technology for instant access".
