Schools warned against employing unregistered teachers
As campuses across the country grapple with how to deal with potential attacks in the wake of the deadly Valentine's Day school shooting in Parkland, Florida, one Pennsylvania district has made a decision to arm teachers - with tiny baseball bats. "It is the last resort", said Millcreek Schools Superintendent William Hall, "but it is an option and something we want people to be aware of".
Hall told the news site, the goal was for every classroom to have one.
I do not believe that allowing a teacher, who is already extremely underpaid, under appreciated and has been through years of school exclusively to teach, should have to bare the burden of keeping a child safe in the event of an active shooter.
Hall added that he's not concerned that students may use the bats to harm each other, saying besides the fact that they are locked up, there are other objects in the classroom that could be "used in an aggressive manor".
The Times noted that social media users have castigated the school district's new policy.
"This is a tool to have in the event we have nothing else", said Cacchione.
However, the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., prompted the northwestern Pennsylvania district to revisit its policies, he said. "They're the little souvenir bats that you buy in baseball parks", Hall told the Post.
The question of whether teachers should carry firearms to protect their classrooms from shooters has become a subject of heated political debate.

A Pennsylvania school district has given its teachers small wooden baseball bats as a reminder to fight a school shooter with any weapon available should other options fail.
One survey response mentioned bats in case teachers or students need to fight back, Hall said.
The method is taught by the private Alice Institute in Medina, Ohio, which encourages shooting victims to throw things - books, chairs, whatever's handy - at a shooter if they can't escape or hide.
"I thought they were joking when they said they gave out bats".
It's part of the Trojan Response plan - we're not making it up - which stands for: "Threat assessment", "Run", "Obstruct and barricade", "Join forces", "Attack", and "Never give up".
With a total cost of less than $2,000, the bat plan is likely less expensive and controversial than fully arming teachers.
