At the time the legislation was being talked about, Mr. Trump had actually simply begun building on a 72-story tower near the United Nations, and he consequently stated he would set up sprinklers there at an expense of $3 million.

One man has died and four firefighters have been injured in a blaze at Trump Tower in NY.

The New York police department closed 5th Ave between West 55th Street to West 57th Street and West 56th Street between Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue.

According to ABC 7, New York's ABC affiliate, investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the cause of the blaze is not yet known but the apartment was "virtually entirely on fire" when firefighters arrived after 5:30 p.m.

The fire broke out just before 6 p.m. Saturday, officials said. Residents and employees were evacuated from the skyscraper and about 200 firefighters worked to put out the blaze on the 50th floor of the building, four of whom sustained minor injuries.

An automatic alarm alerted the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to the fire engulfing the apartment on the high-rise building. "The apartment is quite large", according to the Financial Times.

The fire on Saturday was the second at Trump Tower this year. One man died in the blaze, and four firefighters were injured.

The bill was later passed in March 1999 allowing buildings built before that year to not have sprinklers unless there were major renovations.

Firefighters reported smoke throughout tower and inspected Trump's residence but did not say if it was damaged. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Trump lobbied against a bill that would have required sprinklers to be installed in all residential buildings in New York, backing down only after existing buildings like his own were allowed to be grandfathered in, the New York Daily News reported.

Daniel Nigro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department, told reporters that the blaze was "a very hard fire, as you can imagine". The headquarters of the Trump Organisation is on the 26th floor. It also complimented the building saying it was "well built".
