South Africa: Jacob Zuma due in court to face corruption charges

Former President Jacob Zuma visit the Soweto home of the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela on 4 April 2018

South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma who was forced to resign, has said that the graft charges leveled against him are "politically motivated", Channels Television is reporting.

He intends to challenge the legitimacy of the case - his lawyer will file for a legal review of the National Director of Public Prosecution (NDPP)'s decision to pursue the case.

Zuma's legal team was headed up by Advocate Hoosen Gani, the state was led by Advocate Billy Downer, and French arms company Thales - accused number two - was represented by Senior Counsel Anton Katz.

Zuma is facing 16 charges relating to 783 payments he allegedly received in connection with the controversial arms deal.

Selfe said Zuma should not be given a cent in state assistance for his upcoming trial, set to start on June 8. The charges, linked to an arms deal in the 1990s when Zuma was deputy president, were recently reinstated after being rejected almost a decade ago.

Mr Zuma subsequently made efforts to avoid the charges in January, as he submitted arguments to the NPA why they should be dropped.

"Zuma has opened our eyes as black people that the problem is not the government of ANC but the systems in place that prevent black people from benefiting from the economy", said Mondli Mthembu, 32, a laboratory analyst who traveled over 150 km (93 miles) to support Zuma.

Many say he has survived several controversies and criminal accusations until now because the ANC always came to his aid. Judge Themba Sishi said Zuma was free "on warning". President Cyril Ramaphosa's office confirmed that the appeal against this part of the judgment also fell away. It was an order ignored by Zuma's supporters Friday.

Speaking in Zulu in his home province, Zuma said that the judiciary and politicians believed that he did not have rights.

Zuma thanked the crowd for supporting him, as they had previously. Except this time, it won't be a political fight, but a legal one - where facts and forensics will count for much more than chants and cheerleading.

"I keep asking what has Zuma done and no-one has an answer for me", he told the crowds.
