Robert Griffin III surprisingly signs with Ravens after a year out of the NFL

Baltimore Ravens sign former Cleveland Browns QB Robert Griffin III

Griffin, who was out of football all of previous year, was signed by the Ravens on Wednesday, the team announced.

Now that last year's backup Ryan Mallett is a free agent, Baltimore was in the market for a No. 2 quarterback and the Ravens circled back to Griffin, who was still itching to play again and remained in contact with Baltimore. The only other besides Joe Flacco was Josh Woodrum.

Griffin spent another injury-plagued season with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, making just five starts where he threw only two touchdowns and three interceptions and completed 59 percent of his pass attempts. He turned 28 in February. He put up 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions during the 2012 regular season.

"I felt like (Griffin) really wanted to be here".

The 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year with Washington has been healthy enough to play for just 40 of the 80 possible games in his National Football League career. He's a very talented quarterback that's had a lot of success in this league early on.

But Griffin was the starting quarterback the last time the Browns recorded a win, on December 24, 2016.

NYC could get 7 inches of snow today
Steady snowfall in NY forced the Yankees to postpone their scheduled home opener against Tampa Bay on April 2. The worst travel conditions will be Tuesday into Tuesday evening, with snow covered roads a good bet.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome says Griffin will sign the contract next week after reaching an agreement late Tuesday.

A Week 14 game against the Ravens, however, changed Griffin's trajectory.

But Griffin, who had a history of injuries in college, reinjured his knee in the NFC wild-card-game loss to the Seattle Seahawks and underwent surgery on both his LCL and ACL.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh is optimistic about the signing; saying the deal was a bargain and that it improved the team.

"So we're excited about it". I really feel that way. "I felt like he really wanted to be a Raven". "I'm pretty excited about this player". But at this point, we just want him to stay healthy. "We're always working to make our roster as good as it can be". They like him as a person.
