To date, IDPH has reports of 56 people, including two deaths, in the Chicago area and in central IL who have experienced severe bleeding and reported using synthetic cannabinoids.

IDPH officials warn that the contaminated products could be in any county across the state. "Preliminary testing of some of the cannabinoids purchased by the undercover officer revealed a detectable amount of brodifacoum, a toxic substance frequently used in rat poison". While officials are continuing to evaluate what is causing the previously unseen bleeding, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Monday that nine of the cases have come up positive for a rat poison called brodifcoum, which acts as a powerful anti-coagulant.

The Illinois Department of Public Health says that 56 people have been injured, two of whom fatally, after ingesting synthetic cannabinoids, often called Spice, K2, or fake weed. Symptoms include coughing up blood, nose bleed, blood in the urine and bleeding gums, Arnold said. At least 56 people were hospitalized and identified as having symptoms related to the fake marijuana. The products, which have been around for years, can be smoked or vaporized in e-cigarettes and are commonly sold in convenience stores, gas stations and drug paraphernalia shops across the United States.

"We continue to see the number of cases rise", said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.

No information about the patient's name, age or gender, or the county where the death occurred, had been provided as of Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"There could be additional deaths coming; it is hard to say", she added.

In 2016, 33 people in Brooklyn were made ill from suspected overdoses of synthetic pot.

While the substances are often marketed as a safe and legal alternative to marijuana, US officials say that they "affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana", and "their actual effects can be unpredictable and, in some cases, more unsafe or even life-threatening".

People who smoke synthetic cannabinoids can have rapid heart rate, vomiting, agitation, confusion and hallucinations, according to the CDC.

The number of acute poisonings from synthetic cannabinoids rose sharply between 2010 and 2015, according to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016.

Cara Smith, spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office told the Tribune, "If you use synthetic drugs, you're playing Russian roulette with your life".
