Members of Hamas in Gaza City Analysts Planned Gaza march on Israeli border is a ‘futile publicity stunt
Hundreds of other Palestinians were wounded on March 30, many of them by gun fire, when the Israeli army opened fire on a mass protest of tens of thousands along the Gaza border.
Larijani on Sunday condemned the "criminal and inhuman" move by the "illegitimate and occupying regime of Israel" against the peaceful protest by the Palestinians known as "Great March of Return" held on the Gaza border. The next day of the incident, thousands attended the funeral of those killed and there were calls of "revenge".
United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called for an "independent and transparent investigation" and European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini followed suit, calling in a statement for a probe into Israel's use of live ammunition.
Fifteen Palestinians were killed and more than 700 wounded in Friday's violence near the Israeli border, according to Palestinian health officials.
The border area was relatively quiet on April 2 morning, but tents erected for the protests remained.
A draft statement put forth to the Council urging restraint and calling for an "independent and transparent investigation" of the violence was blocked by the United States and the United Kingdom, which raised objections and said it did not support its adoption. "I think all our soldiers deserve a medal", Lieberman told ArmyRadio on Sunday.
Protests have continued since Friday but at a far smaller scale.
The military said some of those who were shot had fired at soldiers, rolled burning tyres and hurled rocks and fire bombs towards the border.
Rights groups said that regardless of disputes over video claims, it's unlawful for the Israeli government to use lethal force when Palestinian protesters don't pose an imminent threat to the lives of its soldiers.
Eight of the dead men belonged to Hamas - the Islamist faction that has ruled in Gaza since 2007 - while the other two belonged respectively to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, affiliated with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement, and the Palestinian branch of Islamic Jihad. Video posted online shows unarmed Palestinians being shot in the back while taking part in Friday's protest.
The sit-in ends on May 15, or Nakba Day, which will commemorate 70 years since the ethnic cleansing of 750,000 Palestinians by Zionist militias from their villages and towns. It said another man is missing.
Several Palestinian human rights groups have sent a letter to the Israeli attorney general, Avichai Mandelbeit, and the chief military advocate general, Sharon Afek, demanding they order an immediate criminal investigation into the Israeli military killings.
Many Palestinians in Gaza are descendants of those who were displaced in 1948.
