CJTF arrests 5th most wanted Boko Haram terrorist in Lagos
"The gunmen came with the suicide bombers, and as they were engaged by soldiers, some of them sneaked into the confused fleeing crowd and detonated themselves killing about 15 people, leaving over 80 others injured", said Momodu Bukar, an operative of Civilian-JTF.
He said that since the start of the conflict in 2009, more than 20,000 people had been killed, thousands of girls, women, boys and men abducted, while children continue to be used routinely as so-called "suicide" bombers.
Maiduguri residents reported hearing at least five explosions and sounds of gunfire coming from the Cashew Plantation area.
The agency said more than two dozen Boko Haram militants launched an attack in the Northern region of the country on Sunday.
"Eighteen Boko Haram terrorists on foot attacked the military base while seven suicide bombers targeted residents of nearby Bale Shuwar and Alikaranti villages at 8:50 p.m. (1850 UTC)", an officer who asked not to be identified told the news agency AFP.
He said the troops recovered a Toyota Land Cruiser, one AK 47 Rifle, 15 Rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, one magazine and 47 Jerry cans of petrol from the insurgents.
"In another development, troops of Operation Lafiya Dole deployed at a checkpoint ahead of Muna Zawiya in the outskirts of Maiduguri, on Thursday, neutralised four suicide bombers comprising a male and three females".
Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole on a fighting patrol have killed 4 Boko Haram insurgents in an ambush yesterday in Malumti.
Army spokesman Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu said Fifteen persons including a soldier have so far been confirmed dead in the encounter, while about 83 persons suffered varying degrees of injuries were said to be receiving medical attention.
The government has not disclosed which elements of Boko Haram it is in discussions with, and neither was it clear which faction carried out Sunday's attack. This calls for collective vigilance by all security stakeholders and the public.
Finally, the military once again urged the general population to monitor and discern odd peoples and suspicious activities in their communities and inform security agencies.
