India confirms death of 39 workers abducted by IS in Iraq

39 Indians killed by Islamic State in Iraq

Thirty-nine missing Indian workers, who were taken hostage by ISIL in the Iraqi city of Mosul, have been killed, India's Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Tuesday.

Swaraj said Tuesday she was duty-bound to tell Parliament first about the death of the 39 Indians abducted by the Islamic State in Iraq and the government did not keep anyone in the dark amid criticism that their families were not informed about their relatives. "Yesterday 38 matches were confirmed and 39th person had been 70 per cent matched because DNA of his relatives was used in absence of his parents", she said.

Asking why Sushma Swaraj repeatedly misled the nation and the families and gave them "false hopes", Surjewala said that the government had - seven times from 2014 till July 2017 - said these Indians were safe, alive and being provided basic amenities and food.

The Congress and the government got into a war of words after Ms. Swaraj accused the principal Opposition party of doing "politics over the dead" and prevented her from speaking on the issue in the Lok Sabha. "The plane carrying mortal remains will first go to Amritsar, then to Patna and then to Kolkata", she added.

As per the official reports now, the Islamic State seized control of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, in June 2014 after it defeated the Iraqi Army and in the result, they killed thousands of civilians including these Indian citizens. Even, we do not have any information regarding the mortgaged Indian workers. "I refused to close the files (of the 39 Indians) till we had concrete proof in hand (about their death)", she said.

The External Affairs Minister informed the Rajya Sabha that the 39 persons that went missing in June 2014 were kidnapped by ISIS and were reportedly dead.

"They were killed in front of my eyes", said Harjit Masih, who suffered a gunshot wound before he managed to escape.

According to Financial Express, both Iraq and India had maintained that the 39 Indians were alive until October past year.

Out of the deceased, 27 people were from Punjab, 6 from Bihar, 4 from Himachal Pradesh and 2 from West Bengal. Sushma Swaraj said that 39 Indians have been killed by ISIS. The workers were trying to leave Mosul when they were held hostage. She said their bodies had been exhumed and a DNA analysis was done.

"The bodies were sent to Baghdad for DNA testing".

Search operations led to a mound in Badush where local residents said bodies had been buried by the ISIS group, Swaraj said.

"Some kin of the victims have questioned as to why they were not told about the deaths before the Parliament", Swaraj said at a press conference in New Delhi.
