Students disrupt Walkout Day moment Of silence

ABQ students join national walkout seeking safer schools

The 17-minute walkout - which took place at high schools throughout the US - was in response to the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 14 students and three school staff members were shot and killed.

Hundreds of Montclair High School students stood outside in the amphitheater.

York Catholic High School student council president Brian Hand said "why would you walk out of school, rather why wouldn't you make 17 new friends, or why wouldn't you compliment 17 people?"

But the move didn't receive universal cheers.

"I join in solidarity with the students, teachers, faculty and family members across the country who are honoring the lives lost in another senseless school shooting and telling lawmakers that enough is enough", the statement reads.

"Due to this fact, as well as concerns for student safety on this day of national attention, our schools are directed to not permit students to stage a walkout".

"I babysit for kids that go to that school", Hughes says.

Another student who was equally - if not more - frustrated with the situation was Charlie Beckett, who took a vocal stand against all her classmates who weren't taking the moment seriously. Many held signs urging gun control. "That's what we're going to look at when we're monitoring this".

The protests took place at schools from the elementary level through college, including some that have witnessed their own mass shootings: About 300 students gathered on a soccer field at Colorado's Columbine High, while students who survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School attack in 2012 marched out of Newtown High School in CT.

They are stopping lessons for 17 minutes in memory of the 17-people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

But in South Carolina's largest school district, officials said they were discouraging students from participating and also told local media they wouldn't be allowing reporters on campuses to view the events. Last month, a Women's March co-chair, Tamika Mallory, boasted of her attendance at a rally by Louis Farrakhan where the Nation of Islam leader made the latest in a long string of anti-Semitic remarks.

"I've witnessed so many mass shootings, too many", said Reed.

Sandberg recalled that although she experienced deep pain on losing her husband, but she can not even imagine the trauma that parents go through when their child goes to school in the morning but does not return because of a massacre. "If they know that we don't care if we get in trouble, they'll maybe finally believe we're serious about trying to make change".

Earlier this month, Shapiro led a group of 139 heads of Jewish day schools who signed an open letter voicing their support for students organizing for gun reform after the Parkland shooting.

The idea of chaperoned protests rubbed some students the wrong way, however. Tulsa Public Schools did not count any of the participating students absent.

"New Prague Area Schools fully respects and recognizes that students have free speech rights".

At Lewis Central Middle School, Principal Jim Dermody visited classrooms to talk to students about school safety and walk-outs, he said.

"It's very important to fill safe within a school, and a lot of students don't so you have to push it so it becomes safe", says student Caroline Kurtz.
