Highway Patrol: Clinton police officer killed, 2 others hurt

A Clinton Mo. police officer was killed in a shooting Tuesday

The 30-year-old had been with the department, then returned to the force after a shooting last year killed Clinton police officer Gary Michael.

One police officer was killed during a shooting with a suspect barricaded in a home in Clinton, Missouri.

Investigators said officer Christopher Ryan Morton died after responding to a 911 call in the town of Clinton, after hearing two women screaming in the background. Investigators say one of the officers were shot in the arm and the other in the shoulder.

At some point in time in that interaction they [police officers] were shot at by the suspect from inside the residence.

Ryan Gaydos is an editor for Fox News. He then worked as a reserve officer until September 24, 2017, when he returned to the force full time.

In August, a Clinton officer was gunned down during a routine traffic stop.

One officer was fatally shot inside the home, he said. The other is being treated for what were described as minor injuries.

"It's hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty", said Sgt. Lowe.

According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt Bill Lowe, Morton was shot after a 911 call came in from a home near downtown Clinton.

Lowe said that shortly after officers arrived on the scene, they were shot at from the suspect who retreated inside the house, the Star reported. "Officer Christopher Ryan Morton gave the #UltimateSacrifice" she wrote.

Officials say Morton served with distinction for the citizens of Clinton as a full-time police officer from February 2015 to January 2017. "He was just one of those kind of guys", Oberkrom said.

"Certainly when Officer Michael was killed on August 6 of past year it was just devastating to our community, and these things as we've said then and I'll say it again, they just don't happen in small towns like ours".

"The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department", said Sgt. Lowe.

"It's just another tragic event for this community and especially this police department".
