According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt Bill Lowe, Morton was shot after a 911 call came in from a home near downtown Clinton.
Lowe said that shortly after officers arrived on the scene, they were shot at from the suspect who retreated inside the house, the Star reported. "Officer Christopher Ryan Morton gave the #UltimateSacrifice" she wrote.
Officials say Morton served with distinction for the citizens of Clinton as a full-time police officer from February 2015 to January 2017. "He was just one of those kind of guys", Oberkrom said.
"Certainly when Officer Michael was killed on August 6 of past year it was just devastating to our community, and these things as we've said then and I'll say it again, they just don't happen in small towns like ours".
"The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department", said Sgt. Lowe.
"It's just another tragic event for this community and especially this police department".
