According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is working on noise-cancelling, over-ear headphones that will rival nose just Bose but Apple's own Beats brand.

People close to this knowledge have stated that Apple is reportedly going to be launching the pair of premium headphones this year, but there are lots of development challenges the company is going to be facing.

Apple's AirPods earphones have been a surprise hit. As Bloomberg notes, Apple's HomePod costs about $100 more than a similar speaker from Sonos, so it's entirely possible it would mark up its headphones similarly. Of course, since Apple abandoned the headphone jack on the iPhone, we can expect future audio releases to be wireless and include some variant of the W-series wireless chip.

Amazon talking to banks about checking account-like product
It's completely possible that the company will shy away from the effort and nothing will happen, reports The Wall Street Journal . The Wall Street Journal said any potential collaboration is " in its early stages and may not come to fruition".

However, Apple had development troubles and the headphones have gone through multiple redesigns already, says Bloomberg.

Apple-branded headphones would seemingly cannibalize Beats headphones, although Beats also sells lower-priced wireless headphones that probably won't directly compete with the new product.

According to the latest statistic, companies like Beats, Bose, Sennheiser, Sony and Skullcandy are the leading players in a headphone market that will generate $20 billion in annual revenue by 2023, almost doubling this year's projected sales, according to Research and Markets. Given their over-the-ear design, they will likely sound superior to the AirPods as well. One area the company is now looking to make a bigger splash in is the headphone market. It's worth noting that numerous current top options in the wireless noise-cancelling market are pricey as well, though: Bose's QuietComfort 35 go for $350, while Sennheiser's HD1 Wireless initially retailed for $500.
