Mirai Nagasu is the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Winter Games

Mirai Nagasu is the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Winter Games

American figure skater Mirai Nagasu made history last week when she became the first American woman - and the third woman ever - to land a triple axel jump at the Olympics.

Zagitova, 15, and her Russian teammate Evgenia Medvedeva, who is 18 and was second in the short program, are proof.

Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva of Russian Federation, competing under a neutral flag, took gold and silver in the event.

Tennell posted a season-best score of 68.94 points in her 2-minute, 50-second short program February 10, contributing to the US earning bronze in the team event.

"It's been a long three weeks, and we got here, got to walk in the Opening Ceremonies, and then I saved the team event with Adam [Rippon] and the Shibutanis". With a free program to go, and world records and a team medal already under their belts, let's apply the same standard to both groups and NOT be so quick to write the women off.

Chen said she came into the Olympics thinking that she might want to give up skating for college but is now determined to make it back for Beijing 2022 at age 22.

Figure skating competition at the Olympics will continue Tuesday night ET with the ladies' short program.

"I hope I'll be there with him", she said. In the free skate, she made her approach but popped the jump, scoring zero points. We couldn't agree more - Mirai is still absolutely in medal contention, as the final event of the women's skating competition, the free skate, will be occurring on Thursday evening.

She was followed by Yevgenia Medvedeva, 1.31 points behind.

But she wasn't always nailing figure skating's hardest move. The 28-year-old bronze medalist made sure Nagasu's outfit looked flawless before she hit the ice, and the endearing moment was caught on camera.

"As a result, developing skaters are taught to value simple, clean skates, rather than taking risks on technically more challenging programs", said Rachael Flatt, a 2010 Olympian who teaches part-time at Solar4America Ice in San Jose. It's very inspirational. I think she will inspire so many skaters that the impossible is possible. I've gotten some date requests, which is kind of cool I guess. When it was over, after all those years of much-discussed determination, she just laughed.

American ski great Lindsey Vonn not only won a bronze medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics, she also had a chance to scatter some of her grandfather's ashes on a rock near the mountain where the downhill races were run. I'd love to print some out and put them on my wall.

Tennell, a soft-spoken 20-year-old in her first full senior global season after back injuries, said she wasn't sure what the reasonable expectations should have been for these USA women.

Tennell likes her routine.

"The flow of my skating is a big thing I need to work on", she said.

"My teammates have really supported me and we've helped each other".

She scored 128.34 points to also place ninth in the free skate and finished with a total of 192.35 points. "And you know, I practice it a bunch of times and you've just got to go out there and do what you can do".

This might be unpleasant to read, but many others in the field encountered the same obstacles she did. This was the American team's first gold medal in this event since 1998.
