Former NFL player's social media post prompts closure of California school

A former National Football League player who attended a prestigious private high school in Los Angeles was detained by police Friday in connection with a social media post that prompted the closure of the school due to security concerns, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the matter.

Martin allegedly posted a picture to his Instagram that showed a shotgun surrounded by shells with the caption "when you're a bully victim & a coward, you options are suicide, or revenge".

The Associated Press reported Friday that the school, the private Harvard-Westlake prep school in Los Angeles, was evacuated Friday following the post.

Martin was trying to check himself into the hospital, according to the person who was not authorized to speak publicly.

"The image also included "#HarvardWestlake" and "#MiamiDolphins" superimposed over the shotgun, along with social media handles for former Dolphins teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey, and a pair of former Harvard-Westlake classmates.

Gun violence is one of the biggest trending topics in the country following the deaths of 17 high-school students at Florida's Stoneman Douglas High School less than a week ago.

"We have confirmed that he's been located - the suspect, in this case", said Sgt.

The NFL published a 144-page report from attorney Ted Wells, which included a series of distressing text messages from Martin to his parents alleging bullying throughout middle and high school, at Stanford and in Miami. He also added hashtags of Harvard-Westlake, the high school he attended, and the Dolphins. Out of an abundance of caution, and because the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority, we made the decision to close school today.

Martin revealed on social media in 2015 that he had attempted suicide several times.

On Friday morning, school administrators told Harvard-Westlake students that they were told of a "disturbing social media post that mentioned Harvard-Westlake by name". He did not play in 2014 and resumed his career in 2015 with the Buffalo Bills, where he has played the past three seasons. Martin is Black and Incognito is white.

Another potential school shooting was prevented after Los Angeles police took proper action in response to an online threat.
