Broward Sheriff: Deputies to carry rifles at Florida school

Parents students and community members gathered at Pine Trails Park for a sunset vigil in honor of the victims of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting

An armed school resource officer on campus where a gunman killed 17 people never went inside the high school or tried to engage the gunman during the attack, a Florida sheriff said Thursday.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel on Wednesday said that deputies qualified to carry AR-15s will have them with them on campus moving forward, with the blessing of school officials.

Israel said he chose to suspend and place Peterson under an internal investigation after viewing a video that showed the deputy's actions during the rampage on February 14, as well as witness statements and the deputy's own statement.

Israel said surveillance footage captured Peterson responding to the building where the shooting was unfolding.

Israel said that deputies will now carry rifles on school grounds in Broward County.

"This is a awful day for Parkland, Broward County, the state of Florida and the U.S.", he told reporters on February 14.

"What matters is that when we, in law enforcement, arrive at an active shooter, we go in and address the target", the sheriff said.

Israel said he had made a decision to suspend Peterson, but "As is his right, Scot Peterson chose to resign". Add Florida School Shooting as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Florida School Shooting news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Israel also said that "we also need to talk about sensible gun control".

In 2014, the Broward County Crime Commission named Peterson the SRO of the year for the Parkland district of the Broward Sheriff's Office.

"I walked through the crime scene 30 minutes after this horrific killer, this detestable coward, took away 17 of our family members", Israel said to students who gathered for the event.

The sheriff also revealed that since 2008, BSO was involved in 23 calls regarding Nikolas Cruz and his brother. "Because we have people on the second floor, and the people are saying, 'No, he's not on the second floor'".

At 3:41 p.m., Cruz was identified and taken into custody. But he said that details over the office's response remained unclear. The shooting was the deadliest at a US high school to date, Reuters reports.
