Gabriella Papadakis held her nerve to post an impressive score despite the costume malfunction

French figure skater Gabriella Papadakis said that the wardrobe malfunction during her performance was her 'worst nightmare happening at the Olympics.' The athlete said that she was nearly in tears after this episode.

When Papadakis' halter-top dress became unfastened at the beginning of her performance alongside partner Guillaume Cizeron in the short dance on Monday afternoon, the cameras kept rolling as she fought to protect her modesty while still executing the key elements required by the judges.

Gabriella Papadakis calls this incident her worst nightmare. South Korean ice dancer Yura Min's costume became unhooked just seconds into her routine with partner Alexander Gamelin on February 11.

"I think in the twizzles it kind of affected us the most", Cizeron said, referring to the rapid, one-footed turns that ice dancers frequently perform, "because when you are rotating it is hard to keep your dress on when it's open".

"It's frustrating to lose points just because of a costume problem", she said.

It's not what we get ready for when we train.

The French duo stayed relatively calm throughout the program and ended up with an 81.93 score that landed them in second behind Canadian stars Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who scored 83.67.

"But it won't knock her down", Papadakis said. Still, there is no way of knowing whether he and Papadakis' routine would have been good enough for first place even without the wardrobe malfunction.

"Two points can be caught up".

Papadakis is not the first figure skater to have a wardrobe fail at these Games.

"I felt it right away, and then I prayed". 'I told myself, "I don't have a choice".

"Instead of dancing and being in the moment, they were just trying to keep it together", Dubreuil said.

Viewers who watched it live saw the full shape of Papadakis' left breast emerge in the final seconds of the routine, as the pair skated to Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You".

The 22-year-old tried pulling up her costume and covering her modesty during the full performance but that was in vain.

Wardrobe malfunctions are embarrassing and daunting, especially when you are performing at a mega platform like Olympics where all the eyes of thousands of spectators are on you.
