Apple's Excellence In Design Leads To Employees Smacking Into Glass Walls

Apple's New Spaceship HQ Building Has Glass Walls So Clear Employees Are Taking Headers

Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends

And that apparently resulted in some Apple employees bumping into these glass panes, reports Bloomberg.

The transparent design looks flawless and handsome, but it is also resulting in cases of distracted employees smacking into the panes. After the incidents, employees began using Post-its to mark where walls are, but the sticky notes were reportedly removed "because they detracted from the building's design".

"The workspaces and parklands are created to inspire our team as well as benefit the environment", said Apple CEO Tim Cook a year ago.

The company famous for its innovative design experienced at least two incidents of men walking into glass and causing injuries serious enough to warrant calls for local emergency services in the early days of its new "spaceship" campus, according to documents MarketWatch obtained via a public-records request. Collisions have been one very clear downside of Apple's $427 million spaceship office in Cupertino, according to a story out of Bloomberg. Jobs wanted Apple's employees to smoothly move through the headquarters without having to take a minute away from thinking about their work. Inside, work spaces known as "pods" also have glass walls and doors created to foster a culture of openness.

Originally a Steve Jobs' idea, the structure was hailed as a "statement of openness, of free movement".

"While it is a technical marvel to make glass at this scale, that's not the achievement", Jony Ive told Wired after the opening a year ago. "The achievement is to make a building where so many people can connect and collaborate and walk and talk", Ive told Wired in May.

If you're planning on heading to Apple's new headquarters in Silicon Valley, you may want to look up from your iPhone every once in a while, not just to make sure you see the pretty architecture, but to make sure you don't run into it. After all, Apple has already been sued by a customer who walked into the glass of an Apple store in 2011.

We all know how important design is to Apple, which could account for why they didn't put safety markings on the glass.

The Independent has contacted Apple for a comment.
