Apple HomePod 10+ things you should know before you buy

And, crucially, the HomePod also incorporates Apple's HomeKit software for home automation.

This new marking issue is another setback for the device as it tries to compete with the already well established Amazon Echo and Google Home.

According to TechInsights, Apple's HomePod costs $216 to make and has an extremely thinner profit margin when compared to the likes of Apple Watch and iPhone.

There's no denying that the Apple HomePod is a marvel of engineering, with early reviews suggesting it's one of the best sounding smart speakers now on the market.

The good news is that the marks appear to fade somewhat with time; when I reviewed the HomePod last week, it was sitting in a different location on my cabinet, and while there's a white ring there too, it's much less prominent.

"It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-damping silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces", states the Apple site.

Similarly, the HomePod, or more accurately Siri, has impressive chops for quickly deciphering which Apple device you're speaking to and responding correctly, most every time. Images have shown that the device leaves round white marks on wooden surfaces similar to those left by mugs or wine glasses if drink coasters aren't used.

This was first discovered by Wirecutter and Pocket-lint reviewers Jon Chase and Stuart Miles, claiming that during a 20 minute testing period, the HomePod smart speaker left a white ring on a wooden worktop that was previously treated with Danish oil.

Update February 14, 12:15pm: Added additional information about placing the HomePod on soft surfaces. If they still don't go away, Apple says to "clean the surface with the furniture manufacturer's recommended cleaning process".

"It excels as a high-quality smart speaker for listening to Apple Music, but trails behind Amazon and Google when it comes to voice control", we wrote. The company recommends cleaning your HomePod with a dry cloth and warns not to use any household cleaners while doing so.

Apple made a big deal about the sound quality its HomePod would produce.
