The British Home Office unveiled a new technology Tuesday that it said can detect extremist content on any online platform with a high degree of accuracy. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said the government may even make tech companies use it by law.

Governments and technology companies can make the internet a safer place by collaborating to prevent the circulation of terrorist propaganda, Amber Rudd has said.

According to ASI Data Science, the software is capable of detecting 94 per cent of IS's online activity, with an accuracy of 99.995 per cent.

Anything the software identifies as potential IS material would be flagged up for a human decision to be taken.

Rudd will visit Silicon Valley this week to discuss the technology and "hold a series of meetings with the main communication service providers to discuss tackling terrorist content online". It says that the system uses advanced machine learning to analyze the sound and visual components of videos for "subtle signals".

Facebook is one of the platforms the government has been pestering to do more to combat online extremism.

It can be used by any platform and across a range of video-streaming and download sites in real time. There are tools out there that can do exactly what we're asking for.

"We're not going to rule out taking legislative action if we need to do it", the home secretary said. I have been impressed with their work so far following the launch of the Global Internet Forum to Counter-Terrorism, although there is still more to do, and I hope this new technology the Home Office has helped develop can support others to go further and faster.

The tool is intended primarily to be used by smaller companies.

However, the bigger challenge is predicting which parts of the internet the terrorists will use next.

Ms Rudd is visiting the USA to meet tech companies to discuss the idea, as well as other efforts to tackle extremism.

The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, launched past year, brings together several governments including the U.S. and United Kingdom, and major internet firms like Facebook, Google, Twitter and others.
