Apple could be rethinking its release cycle for iOS and macOS

We now know why an Apple employee decided to leak secret iPhone code

Apple confirms iPhone source code leak

According to people familiar with the change, Apple will begin focusing on the next two years of updates for its iOS devices, instead of forcing engineers to cram tons of new features into an annual update.

If you're an iPad power user, I hope you got all of the multi-tasking features you were hoping for in iOS 11. But there's a good reason for this change, which was reported by Bloomberg. The risk here is that consumers in a competitive environment won't be satisfied with minor changes and jump ship for something more innovative, but it's a chance Apple will have to take if it wants to hold on to its reputation of superior software.

Despite earlier rumors that Apple intends to focus primarily on improving quality and stability of its operating systems, a new round of rumors from Bloomberg suggests iOS 12 won't be completely devoid of new features.

However, pushing back major features for later updates doesn't mean iOS 12 won't bring anything new to the table. More than 90 percent of Apple customers use either of the last two major iOS updates, compared with 30 percent of users who have downloaded the two latest versions of 's mobile OS, according to data from both companies.

This also comes in the wake of Apple dropping the 3.5 mm headphone jack feature since the release of the iPhone 7. This release will also feature universal apps that work across iOS devices and Mac computers. The upgrade will form part of the upcoming macOS 10.14 and will possibly bring iPhone apps, such as the Home app for controlling smart home appliances, to the Mac. One can not remember a time when Apple issued this many updates just to fix problems one after the other.

Unlike Google, Apple doesn't release separate updates for its default apps such as Messages, Calendar, or Mail. Also, it will add the Animoji support in FaceTime (and also Animoji), a redesigned stocks app, Face ID support on iPad, a new way to import photos into an iPad, upgraded Do Not Disturb mode, and a new way to integrate Siri into the iPhone search.

Apple software chief Craig Federighi apparently told his engineers about the change last month, and the effects should be seen in the iOS update that's coming this fall. This feature is targeted to begin public runs in iOS 12 and macOS 10.14 with Apple's own Home app being one of the big test beds.

These include the ability to run several windows in one app, new features for the Pencil stylus, and a button that would allow users to mute notifications from specific email threads.
