"I'm okay", she told reporters.

A frightening scene unfolded Tuesday night as American Emily Sweeney spun out of control during her fourth run and tumbled down the track, causing a stoppage of play during the finals of the women's singles luge competition. "USA's Emily Sweeney crashes in luge, heading to hospital", CNN's Will Ripley tweeted.

Thankfully she was able to walk away from the crash.

A Sergeant in the New York Army National Guard, Emily Sweeney fought for years to make her Winter Olympics debut.

This was the first Olympics for Sweeney, who missed out on a spot in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. According to an online broadcast, she was taken to a hospital. Crashes, however, have not come as often as they did in the 2006 and 2010 Games, both of which left athletes openly complaining about track safety. "I thought it was a great avenue of opportunity", Emily said about joining the military.

Later in the final run, Britcher lost control at the start and collided with a few walls - but got down the track without crashing or sustaining serious injury.

After a brief delay, the competition resumed.
