Egypt army kills 16 militants in raids ahead of presidential polls

Egypt: Will the Sinai military operation succeed?

At least 16 terrorists were killed and four others arrested in a major anti-terrorism operation launched by Egypt on Friday in Northern and Central Sinai, the Egyptian army said on Sunday.

They added that the dead bodies of the 10 militants have been moved to a hospital in nearby Ismailia province.

On November 29, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi gave the military a three-month deadline to clear the Sinai Peninsula of militants, days after terrorists staged a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in northern Sinai that killed over 300 worshippers.

The campaign by the army, navy, air force, border patrol and police is taking place ahead of a March election in which Sisi is seeking a second term.

A spokesman said they found a communication centre, an explosives laboratory and six drug farms.

And last September Sissi met Netanyahu for the first time in public, the encounter coming ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

"The armed forces and the police assert their determination to uproot terrorism and to achieve peace and stability", Rifai said, according to the statement.

In December, militants launched another attack, firing a missile at a helicopter that was part of the entourage of Egypt's defence and interior ministers, who were in the provincial capital El Arish on an unannounced visit.

It said many foreign countries have their eyes set on Sinai, claiming that terrorists carry out attacks in Sinai with "technological backing from intelligence [services] of countries hostile to Egypt".

IS started to scale up its attacks in Sinai from September 2017 onwards, as it started losing territory in Iraq and Syria. Members of the armed forces are barred by law from expressing political opinions in Egypt. Konsowa said he had submitted his resignation to the army in 2014 and it was denied. Last year, militants attacked a Sufi mosque in the region, killing 311 worshipers.
