The qualifying round was scheduled to take place after the conclusion of the men's event, which saw 17-year-old Red Gerard secure gold for the first USA medal in PyeongChang.

Canada's Max Parrot reacts after completing his run in the men's slopestyle finals at Phoenix Snow Park in Pyeongchang, South Korea on February 11, 2018.

Despite inconsistent winds that plagued riders throughout the contest, Gerard stomped his final trick, a backside triple cork 1440, and he was awarded the highest score of the day, an 87.16. McMorris took third after putting up a score of 85.20 in his second run.

Gerard wasn't even born when snowboarding made its Olympic debut 20 years ago, and he now ranks as the sport's youngest USA medalist.

The Gerards have to be the most relatable family of the Olympics thus far. With another trip to the awards podium, he would become the first snowboarder to win two medals at a single Olympics.

"I feel absolutely insane right now", Gerard said following the event.

The teenage snowboarder said past year that he didn't really think about the Olympics. "It's really unique to me and not many can people do it, so just adding that kind of style and technicality to my run is something I like to do and it makes me stand out". "I can not believe what has just happened it is insane". "I never realized how big this is". "I just kind of grew up watching Dew Tour and X Games". Conrad Gerard told the Post. I don't know, [Parrot] had a pretty good run, I was questioning it. The top five highest-scoring teams from the short programs advanced to the free program round.
