Over 40 people infected with HIV in UP after quack from Unnao uses common syringe
The health department in Unnao has filed a police case against a quack for using the same needle to administer injections to every patient and infecting over 20 people with HIV.
Police in India were hunting Rajendra Yadav who fled the city of Bangarmau in December.
Villagers in the area said they rarely saw the fake doctor change his needles, which is likely what prompted the spread of HIV.
He said the doctor could be charged with carrying out a negligent act likely to spread infection of diseases, voluntarily causing grievous harm by using unsafe weapons or means, and practising medicine without having registration as a medical practitioner with the state government.
With India's health care system facing a massive shortage of doctors and hospitals, millions of poor people seek fake doctors for cheap treatment.
At present, India has an estimated 2.1 million people living with HIV.
Five of those infected were children, mostly under the age of 12 years. "We set up unique therapeutic camps in towns in the zone and checked 566 individuals, and 21 were observed to be HIV positive".
The camps were set up after an increase in HIV cases began to show up at district hospitals late past year.
Yadav would visit villages on his bicycle and treat patients outdoors. Villagers said he used the same syringe and needle in the name of cheaper treatment.
"Villagers are ignorant about hygiene", he said.
"An investigation showed that nearly all of them had taken injections from one person", Choudhury said. After the tests, 38 more patients - six from just one family - were found HIV positive, Chowdhary confirmed.
HIV - or the human immunodeficiency infection - is transmitted through blood transfusion, utilization of tainted needles and syringes, unprotected sex, or from mother to tyke. The gathering works with HIV and AIDS patients in the area.
The HIV targets the immune system and weakens people's defence systems against infections and some types of cancer.
