A cesspool of funky flu: ER nurse goes on epic rant about flu season

Katherine Lockler is nurse in Florida who, frustrated after an exhausting 12-hour shift, made a decision to post a video to social media in which she ranted about the flu season and offered up some hospital horror stories.

Lockler spoke to on Thursday about the video, saying she was "frustrated and wanted to share my thoughts and my thoughts weren't out of anger but frustration that people will get the flu unnecessarily".

"Please don't bring your healthy children - especially your newborn babies - into the emergency room", said Milton resident Katherine Lockler in the video, which has been shared nearly 11,000 times since Saturday.

"Especially your newborn babies into the emergency room". "My hands didn't because it's wonderful to watch how many people come through the emergency room, sneeze in their hand and I watch".

Flu season is well under way, bringing with it plenty of people suffering through very bad symptoms, and even more medical professionals wishing that the general public would take better safety precautions.

So what has gotten Escambia County nurse Katherine Lockler so frustrated?

Oh, and she also has a message for everyone yelling at her about the long wait in the emergency room these days: "If you ain't dying now, you're going to have to wait a little bit longer", she says. She uses a sarcastic tone and animated facial expressions at times to get her point across. "Don't bring people with problems or kids because the flu affects them more aggressively". "I'm gonna' teach ya'll a magic trick - it's incredible". In part of the video, she says "there is a cesspool of funky flu at the ER right now".

"Please thank an ER nurse - and every nurse and doctor that's taking care of sick people right now", Lockler added.

In one segment of the video, Lockler pretends to sneeze into her arm as a way to limit the spread of flu-like germs. So guess what? Five flus came in, 15 flus walk out.

"I saw a dad with a toddler crawling on the floor in the emergency room and I approached him and I said, 'Hey dad, I do not feel that that's a wise decision, your child is being exposed to some really nasty germs on this emergency room floor, '" she told the newspaper.

Speaking to the Pensacola News Journal, Lockler discussed and apologized for the tone of the video - kind of.

"I believe there's a smidgen of mockery in my voice in light of the fact that the guidelines were given such a large number of times and they were not gotten well", Lockler said.

In the almost seven-minute video, she also discusses easy flu prevention methods. Her reasoning? If you go in there for one ailment, you'll probably catch another, namely the flu. "The message is still flawless, yet in the event that the tone was hostile, that was not the goal".
