Rayees Ahmad Ganie son of Mohd Yousf Ganie, 19, of Narpora, Shopian succumbed to injuries in the wee hours on Wednesday after battling for life for the last five days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura.

Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Devraj Anbu today said that the Army opened fire into a crowd in Shopian on January 27 in self-defence and in the face of the "ultimate provocation" by a stone-pelting crowd, reported ANI.

Police have registered an FIR of murder against the soldiers of the unit.

The news of their deaths in army's firing had triggered a massive controversy in the state with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti calling Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was believed to have assured her that she will seek a detailed report from the army. Tell Mehbooba to withdraw the FIR or else her government would be toppled.

However, on Wednesday another youth, Rayees Ahmed Ganaie of Narpora Shopian succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today after battling for life for almost five days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SKIMS Soura. Singh claimed "the Army men fired in self-defence when a mob attacked them". In case, it is required the persons named in the FIR are to be questioned, the Army will give the necessary permission, they said.

Asked whether the Army's version will be a part of the probe, the state police chief said, "The Army's version, eyewitness accounts and the statement of those who lost their near and dear ones would be included". "The probe will be taken to logical conclusion", she said.
