Low-cost airline easyJet's new boss Johan Lundgren has asked the board to cut his pay to the same level as predecessor Dame Carolyn McCall
EasyJet, the Luton, England-based carrier, had set Lundgren's starting salary at approximately $1.04 million; a raise of almost $48,000.
The CEO of easyJet has revealed his decision to take a £34,000 pay cut to match his predecessor's salary.
"To show my personal commitment, I have asked the Board to reduce my pay to match that of Carolyn's when she was at EasyJet", Lundgren said in a statement, adding, "I also want to affirm my own commitment to address [ing] the gender imbalance in our pilot community, which drives our overall gender pay gap".
He wants to fight the gender pay gap, and to prove he's a man of his word he's reducing his salary from £740,000 ($1.4m) to match that of his predecessor Carolyn McCall.
McCall, who left easyJet at the end of November to join United Kingdom broadcaster ITV, had a base salary of GBP£706,000 (USD$990,000), but Lundgren started in December on £740,000. Lungren's bonus and other elements of his remuneration package are identical to McCall's at the time. The salaries ate decided in consensus with union are men and women are eqally paid. "Like all airlines, pilots are a large proportion of EasyJet's employees, who receive a higher payout than or communities, and most importantly, 94% of pilots are men".

The carrier has also "set a target that 20% of new pilots should be female by 2020, up from 6% in 2015", reports the BBC.
The overall gender pay gap at easyJet is 51.7%. Around 4% of commercial pilots worldwide are female. easyJet does better than the industry as a whole at 5% and easyJet's progressive culture has enabled female pilots to progress more easily than at other airlines.
