Dave's Take: Redskins wouldn't bet on Cousins
01 February 2018, 12:48 | Nina Mathis
The third-year cornerback, coming to the Kansas City Chiefs in a reported trade that would send quarterback Alex Smith to the Redskins, went through a series of emotions on social media Tuesday as news swirled about the move. He made a Pro Bowl in 2016, led the National Football League in completion percentage in 2015, and threw for 329 yards without an interception in his lone playoff start.
Smith was traded to Washington after five seasons in Kansas City. Smith had not only set career marks statistically in the last few months but had established himself as a victor in K.C.to the tune of 50 regular season wins in 5 seasons.
After having been franchise tagged by Washington in each of the past two offseasons, it now appears Cousins will indeed hit the free agent market, where the QB-needy Browns are expected to be a suitor.
Alex Smith is going from a Kansas City roster loaded with playmakers by the names of Kelce, Hunt, and Hill, to a Redskins roster with little supporting cast outside of Jordan Reed, who can never seem to stay healthy for more than a month at a time.
"I haven't even thought about that", Smith said of being traded to Cleveland on "The Dan Patrick Show" early Tuesday.
Until that happens, the West is up for grabs.

Indians to remove Chief Wahoo logo in 2019 It will still sell souvenirs at the stadium and in retail outlets, but MLB's website will no longer carry the items. The team had been phasing out the logo in recent years, substituting a large block "C" insignia on some uniforms.
The deal gives Washington a reliable starting quarterback, though not one who guarantees a postseason run of greatness.
The Broncos were going to go after Cousins before last night's trade, and while the news of Smith-to-Washington doesn't guarantee Cousins-to-Denver, it does mean the Broncos have one less team to compete with. Once Cousins decided not to counter that offer, the Redskins put out a statement - hoping to let the other players and fans know what they had offered. But they have other options, too, including the No. 5 pick in the first round of the draft and an arsenal of other picks to use in a trade. Cousins will have multiple teams bidding for his services.
The Browns are among several teams - including the DenverBroncos, New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars - that could be interested in bringing Cousins on board.
As a result, one of the teams picking in front of Chicago will shift their quarterback plan to Cousins, and another non-QB will be off the board before Ryan Pace and the Bears are on the clock.
The addition of one of these young quarterbacks would provide them stability if the veteran quarterback they acquire ahead of the draft doesn't work out. But Smith, for those who like quarterback won-loss records, has posted a winning record in seven straight seasons.
Smith guided the Chiefs to the playoffs in four of his five seasons.
