Synaptics to ship in-display fingerprint sensors with Vivo smartphones
Even though the world's first smartphone with a (virtually) invisible fingerprint scanner might need a few more months before actually reaching store shelves around the world, its most important party trick is already comparable to many commercial solutions in terms of speed. Vivo, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has already announced the launch of the first-ever fingerprint scanner that is built into the display of the smartphone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is now going on in Las Vegas till 12th Jan 2018.
Alex Feng, Senior VP in Vivo has told in a press release that this new Vivo smartphone is ready for mass production and it will be announced in early 2018. The 6-inch bezel-less smartphone, which appears to be Vivo X20, makes use of the Clear ID FS9500 sensor within an OLED display. Vivo usually pops up on our radar when it shows up at a trade show with a "first ever" feature on smartphones. Today is the second day of the show and Vivo is already attracting a lot of customers by officially launching its in-display fingerprint scanner equipped phone.
Yes, Vivo is the first phone, which was made available in the market with this new technology, however, it is just the beginning, and we are waiting to see new and more advanced technology this year.

It's been nearly a year since we wanted the under-the-display on our phones.
As you touch the screen, the lit-up fingerprint is then reflected into an in-display fingerprint sensor which is then authenticated. While fingerprint scanner in the rear turns out to be old school, Vivo has come up with the future tech - under-display fingerprint technology. The chip-maker went on to explain that the sensors were developed as an "integrated solution" that would work in tandem with the chip-maker's expansive line of Snapdragon CPUs for mobile devices. Fingerprint sensor is prone to that and it is not a big secret that placing it under the display makes flawless sense. The important thing here is the inclusion of a Synaptics in-display fingerprint reader. Device manufacturers were left with very little options, one of them being moving the fingerprint sensor towards the back of the phone - a move which received mostly negative reviews.
