Residents are asked to follow the instructions when conducting the radon test and to submit results to the Connecticut Department of Public Health Laboratory. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving, house fires and unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning combined. Radon occurs naturally in Minnesota soils, and enters homes through cracks or openings in walls or foundations. Testing for radon during the cooler months is highly recommended as many doors and windows remain closed, leaving limited space for the invisible gas to escape.
Jefferson County Public Health is giving out free radon testing kits after high levels have been detected in the county.
It is estimated that almost one home in every 15 in the US has an elevated radon level. Radon can build high levels inside your home, and long term exposure to these high levels of radon is a risk for lung cancer.
Radon testing isn't expensive and can be done either by a professional or by purchasing your own kit.
Place the kit for a few days, away from ventilation and use the winter months to test your home. "It would be less likely to find radon in that soil, but it shows you how the whole state of Colorado is at risk".

Radon levels in the outdoors are usually harmless; however, radon can build up indoors to unsafe levels. Some homes have had radon levels up to 315 picocuries per liter of air with an average of 6.6 pCi/L.
If your home registers high levels of radon, it can be removed from your home through a variety of mitigation systems. More information on radon mitigation can be found at www.epa.gov/radon by clicking on the "Publications and Resources link" and viewing the EPA publication Consumer's Guide to Radon.
The good news is test kits are pretty cheap at $10. After completing a short online form, a free test kit will be mailed within a few weeks. "We encourage everyone to test their homes because levels can vary drastically from home to home".
The Extension Office has partnered with San Juan Basin Public Health to present several community meetings to discuss radon.
