Tennis: Nick Kyrgios through to Brisbane semi-finals

Dolgopolov sheathed racket in Brisbane

Just like his idol, De Minaur went down swinging despite letting a huge opportunity slip in the second set.

However, after saving five break points early in the contest, Kyrgios soon took charge of proceedings and ultimately won easily.

The 22-year-old staved off five break points in the first set, including three in his third service game as the American made a terrific fist of dealing with the booming Kyrgios delivery.

Ukrainian Elina Svitolina got the ideal boost ahead of the Australian Open by lifting the Brisbane International title with a 6-2 6-1 win over qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Saturday.

Dimitrov, who only two months ago won the ATP Finals in London, looked like extending his unbeaten streak against Kyrgios when he broke in the sixth game to win the first set in 30 minutes.

Asked if he thought Tomic would be having any regrets about brushing Brisbane after two Australians made the semis, Kyrgios said: "It was obviously odd not seeing him playing any of these events".

"I try to block it out most of the time because one week they're saying something good and one week they're saying something bad, so I guess I don't really listen to it at all", Kyrgios said.

"He is an unbelievable talent and a good kid as well, " Kyrgios said.

But apart from Kyrgios's frustration with Harrison leaving the court at the end of the first set, there was no evidence of tension and the two shook hands warmly at the end of the match.

"If I wanted to get a code (violation), I would have". You know, the highs and lows.

"Every time I stepped out here the fans gave me such great support".

"I thought I was playing well and there was no real need to get mad - it was the first tournament of the year, a new start. My chances happened to be early in the match, and then he converted his chances".

Harrison was scheduled to partner Dimitrov in a doubles semifinal later Saturday but withdrew from the match, giving top-seeded John Peers and Henri Kontinen a spot in the final.
