HP Recalls Laptops Over Fire Risk
Apparently, some batteries have the possibility of overheating which will pose a fire and burn hazard to its customers. HP that it's recalling batteries for select laptop models, including some in the ProBook, Envy, and ZBook families. However, please note that the "Battery Safety Mode" is only applicable to HP products affected by this recall.
"HP is also providing a BIOS update that places the battery in "Battery Safety Mode" so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adaptor", it added.
HP issued a statement to stay: "The quality and safety of all HP products is our top priority". Therefore the company is providing battery replacement services for free.
'This action pertains to 0.1 per cent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years'.
This follows eight reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating and/or melting, and in one case causing a first-degree burn to someone's hand, with three further cases citing resulting property damage (presumably caused by fire, of course) to the tune of $4,500.

Approximately 2,600 batteries were sold in Canada, 50,000 in the United States and 1,900 in Mexico. The company is also providing a free battery replacement, but the batteries can not be replaced by customers themselves.
Some of the affected models are HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, and HP 11 notebooks. The process involves downloading and installing the Battery Program Validation Utility provided by the company to quickly and easily determine whether or not the battery needs to be replaced, and the whole process only takes up 30 seconds of customers' time.
HP has issued a battery recall notice for a number of its laptops and mobile workstations sold over the last two years due to concerns that the battery inside these machines could be risky and a fire hazard. This mode will discharge the battery and prevent it from being recharged until the battery is replaced.
"HP strongly recommends accepting Battery Safety Mode so that the notebook or mobile workstation can be safely used by connecting to an HP power adaptor".
Why this matters: Battery recalls happen every so often, often due to manufacturing issue.
