Fire officials investigating cause of Redding apartment fire

A Northern California man determined to exterminate a spider ended up setting fire to his own apartment Sunday, according to the Redding Record Searchlight.

"It was a huge wolf spider", Lyndsey Wisegarver, a caregiver for one of the tenants, told the publication.

She said that the man attempted to kill the spider with a torch lighter, a more powerful and pressurized version of a standard lighter.

The residents attempted to put out the flames with a garden hose, but that didn't work so they called in the professionals.

No one was injured, however, the fire did cause about $11,000 in damage.

Wisegarver said the flames soon spread to the apartment's drapes and a flag collection.

A report said the fire forced the residents to evacuate and firefighters were immediately summoned to the building.

Ms Wisegarver and the two men living in the apartment were told it was uninhabitable and that they would have to find another place to live.

They say they were trying to burn the spider with a propane torch when they accidentally ignited the corner of a box spring.
