All that is publicly known about the Zuma payload is that it is a satellite manufactured for the USA government by Northrop Grumman, and it is bound for low-Earth orbit. The launch window opens at 8 p.m.

SpaceX now has 21 successful first-stage touchdowns under its belt, nine of them at Landing Zone 1 and the other 12 on "autonomous spaceport droneships" stationed in the ocean. The launch was originally scheduled for November 2017, but the mission was delayed so SpaceX could review data from a fairing test.

The mission, code named "Zuma", is a Falcon-9 rocket launch, but it is unclear what the rocket is carrying.

"Three, two, one, ignition and liftoff", said a SpaceX commentator as the Falcon 9 rocket launched under cover of darkness from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 8pm (0100 GMT Monday).

It will be carrying a secret payload for the USA government, code-named Zuma.

If all goes according to plan the Falcon Heavy will lift off and enter orbit before two of its booster rockets separate and return to Earth at Cape Canaveral in controlled landings. The centre core of the rocket will then separate from the main module

Aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman was responsible for securing SpaceX's launch services for the Zuma mission.
