The wreckage of the car which met with an accident near Alipur village of Delhi
The victims were on the Delhi-Panipat highway in a Swift Dzire vehicle which police believe was being driven at high speed in a drastically reduced visibility due to fog.
Of the five deceased, the four who died on the spot have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka, 27, a bouncer by profession, Saurabh, 18, a helper in a gym, Yogesh, 24, a private video camera operator, and Harish Roy, 20, a student. Saksham Yadav (28), who died in the evening at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences trauma center, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship.
The players met with the accident at 4 am at a place called Alipur village near Singhu border. A sixth weightlifter (19) was battling for life.
Meanwhile, Yadav is undergoing treatment at Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh and Rohit is being treated at the LNJP Hospital. The athlete had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding.
Police are also probing the angle of drunken driving.
According to reports, the impact of the hit was so high that the vehicle rolled over several times before crashing into the pole. All the other athletes including Bali were residents of Timarpur in north Delhi. Some liquor bottles were found in the auto.
Police said that they were driving towards Karnal in Haryana after the birthday celebrations of one of the occupants of the vehicle.
According to the police, the auto first hit a divider and then crashed into an electricity pole. The auto also had an "L" or Learner's board.
